About Shell
Shell, Wyoming is a small, unincorporated community tucked along the western edge of the Bighorn Basin in north-central Wyoming. Its name is derived from the abundance of fossil shells located in the area. Known for its dramatic canyon scenery, open ranchland, and quiet pace of life, Shell offers a true “out-of-the-way Wyoming” experience while still being accessible from larger regional hubs like Cody, Greybull, and Basin. One of the defining features of the area is nearby Shell Canyon, a rugged limestone corridor carved by Shell Creek. The canyon is home to the well-known Shell Falls, a striking 120-foot waterfall that draws visitors year-round and is easily accessed via the scenic drive along the Bighorn Scenic Byway. The surrounding landscape transitions quickly from high desert plains to forested mountain terrain, offering some of the most visually diverse scenery in the region. Outdoor recreation is a major draw here. Just to the east lies the vast Bighorn National Forest, with its miles of hiking trails, camping areas, fishing streams, and wildlife habitat. To the south and west, the landscape opens toward wide ranch valleys and rolling foothills, with opportunities for horseback riding, hunting, and exploring remote public lands. Shell itself is a quiet residential and ranching community, with a strong sense of privacy and space.
